Hi - my name is Rocky and I'm a Nanday conure! Contrary to what my name suggests, I'm actually a female - I've proven that by laying eggs on occasion. I'm a rather quiet conure - as impossible as that sounds. I lived with my previous owners for 15 years, but they gave me up when they had children. Consequently, I do not do well with children - I hope you understand!

I enjoy sitting on shoulders, and tropical fruit is a great treat for me!

Update from Rocky’s foster mom:

"Rocky turns out to be much sweeter than her name! Because she was territorial while egg-laying, she hasn’t had much time out of her cage the past few months. I took her home to see if she’d mellow.

For several days, she was clingy on my shoulder, but rapidly became braver and now walks down my arms to patrol the tabletop as long as I stay close by.

Rocky is a fabulous dancer! She shimmies her hips, bobbing her head and shifting her feet. When I tap my finger, she dances alongside my hand. For a slow tempo, she gazes into my eyes while she sways her body up and swoops down.

She is not demanding. She has never screamed for attention although she might try to get your attention with “Gimme kisssss.” She can and does scream, but not often, putting her back on her cage calms her down. She preens my ear and the side of my face. I rub her head and her beak. If I surprise her or rub a feather the wrong way, she is quick to use her beak, but she has not bitten me.

In a high voice, she will mock me when I put her on top of her cage. “Go back in! Go back in!” She actually goes back in quite easily, on request or for a treat. She is bananas about bananas, apples and Nutriberries.

It’s not all perfect. She won’t step onto my hand from my shoulder (Why would she?) She gets agitated at any kind of towel or cloth. She has strong feelings about her stuff, but I keep her on my shoulder while I change her cage and talk her through it.

This bird is a real pleasure. I never would have guessed the potential Rocky has to be a fun and loving companion."

Our Mission is Simple

To work in joint cooperation with all avian rescue groups to try and eliminate the need for rescue groups by educating the public about aviculture issues.  Until that is accomplished, we will provide a sanctuary for those unfortunate parrots that are in need of a home.
